The last hurdle before WGHP can turn off channel 8 has been filed with the FCC. On January 25th, the FCC posted a notice that WGHP had filed for a construction permit to "begin building" a channel 35 transmission system. This is just a formality since WGHP has been operating on channel 35 with their pre-transition facilities of 1 million watts at 1200 ft since June 19th, 7 days after the Digital Transition with a Special Temporary Authorization.
By filing this request, the paperwork to officially move from channel 8 to channel 35 will be over. Once the Construction Permit has been filed, WGHP can then file the paperwork to license channel 35 and turn off channel 8. The station expects the FCC to act swiftly on this request. The station has told cable companies that March 3rd is the target date to turn off channel 8 permanently.
